What’s this role about?
GridBeyond are in the process of entering the Japanese Energy market. This role is required to support with the initial phases of market entry consisting of working with the Product, Development and Regulation Teams in GridBeyond to help us firstly understand the Japanese Energy markets and helping to design, build and test the business processes and applications required to transact. The enduring responsibility of this role is with the Market Optimization Team and the purpose is to help GridBeyond provide its customers with a route to market to monetise flexibility in all available energy markets and ancillary services. The role involves a close working relationship with our clients and our market optimisation team to deliver execution of trading strategies initially in Japan, but eventually across all of our jurisdictions, while ensuring all customer sites are responding to grid services. Successful candidates will also be involved in the ongoing development of solutions, tools and reports whilst providing ongoing analysis of markets.
What will I be doing?
- Collaborate with and support software engineering teams and project managers in outlining the business logic related to various ancillary service programs in the Japanese energy market (e.g., RR-FIT FCR, FRR, etc.).
- Offer insights on interpreting specific market regulations based on prior knowledge or thorough research when necessary.
- Identify and gather relevant published materials concerning ancillary service programs in the Japanese market, highlighting key sections that need to be translated into English.
- Serve as a liaison with Transmission System Operator (TSO) contacts as required.
- Act as a bridge with local (Japanese) consultants when needed.
- Facilitate communication with local (Japanese) customers.
- Optimize our portfolio in ancillary services (such as frequency and reserve) and energy markets.
- Analyse market dynamics to define short-term trading strategies, manage trade execution, and handle both financial and physical aspects of our asset positions.
- Support and advance GridBeyond’s entry into new ancillary services and power markets by understanding market structure, analysing potential opportunities, and developing and executing trading strategies.
- Assess and address alarms, taking ownership and responsibility for resolving them promptly.
- Manage customer inquiries (including report configuration, setpoint adjustments, schedule modifications, etc.).
- Support GridBeyond’s smart grid services by handling application processes, conducting weekly and real-time declarations, analysing declarations, managing dispatch, responding to site/application alarms, and generating customer statements.
- Reach out to customers to ensure that dispatch and engagement information is up-to-date and that they are prepared for dispatches.
- Ensure we are always prepared to deliver a dispatch that meets grid requirements, with established procedures and staff ready to respond.
- Continuously monitor service delivery performance and prepare performance reports as needed for grid operators.
- Develop an understanding of customer sites, assets, and control techniques for currently operational sites.
- Provide weekly reports on unit performance and alarms to the business.
- Conduct energy analyses on customer data to identify efficiency improvements, site energy usage issues, and additional savings opportunities for clients in Ireland and the UK.
- Support the deployment team with Cite-See (GridBeyond’s head-end controller).
- Configure and support Centre-See and the Customer Portal for our existing customer base.
- Provide feedback to the development team regarding tools and services that aid in energy analysis.
- Assist in developing clients’ net-zero strategies across various industries.
- Support the integration and assessment of the carbon impact of new renewable technology solutions, along with other activities and service offerings that may emerge as the role evolves.
What do I need to be a good technical fit for this role?
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field
- Knowledge of the Japanese energy sector
- Familiarity with wholesale energy markets and ancillary services is advantageous
- Proficient in both Japanese and English
- Passion for sustainability, renewable technologies, and carbon neutrality
- Experience working on a 24/7 shift schedule is a plus
- Excellent communication skills with strong interpersonal abilities

What’s this role about?
We are looking for a highly qualified electrical engineer with significant experience in Grid Connections to take on a crucial role in facilitating the smooth integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The selected candidate will become part of our expanding US team, leading the design, optimization, and execution of small, medium, and large-scale projects. These projects will primarily focus on battery installations, smart switchgear, and transformer upgrades, enabling customers to connect their large energy-consuming assets to various grid schemes.
Responsibilities:
- Offer technical guidance and expertise throughout all phases of the project, from the initial feasibility assessment to the site going live for both distribution and transmission connections.
- Conduct preliminary grid feasibility assessments.
- Create conceptual designs for interconnection facilities and associated costs.
- Compile and manage the grid connection application process.
- Evaluate utility interconnection studies (including feasibility, impact, and facility studies) and review connection agreements and designs.
- Perform system studies and design for hybrid generation solutions.
- Assess utility expansion plans to identify potential opportunities.
- Carry out initial designs for battery integration as part of tender package.
- Create high level tender packages and manger the tender process.
What will I be doing?
Utility Coordination:
- Provide planning for grid and transmission systems, as well as congestion analysis, to support development activities primarily in the USA.
- Prepare and manage the Utility Connection Agreement and Revenue Metering Plan.
- Interface with utility companies during the study period and facilitate SCADA interface requirements.
- Conduct consultations and reviews with relevant bodies during the permitting process.
Design Package Development
Create a design package for pricing that includes:
- Connection agreements and support for third-party specialists.
- Specifications for BESS functionality, control, and metering equipment.
- Switchgear specifications for both LV and HV systems.
- Utility protection, transformer, earthing, and cabling details.
- Civil works requirements, including concrete slabs and fencing.
- Monitoring specifications and AutoCAD drawings.
- Compliance with relevant standards and directives.
- Scripts for Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and commissioning requirements.
Technical Documentation Review:
- Review technical documentation from contractors, suppliers, and utilities.
- Implement lessons learned from previous projects and assess for cost-saving solutions.
- Ensure all required documentation is provided and understand project milestones.
Construction Phase Support:
- Provide design-related support to installers and approve alternative solutions for unforeseen issues.
- Conduct site inspections and proactively address any installation issues.
- Maintain a lesson learned register and photo log of project progress
Commissioning:
- Execute the commissioning checklist and test battery functionality.
- Record results from BESS control screens, power analysers, and remote monitoring.
- Confirm protection settings for circuit breakers and witness utility protection testing.
- Update design drawings to reflect as-built conditions and create operation and maintenance manuals.
Relationship Management:
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key customers and third-party contractors.
- Stay informed about advancements in BESS, EV chargers, and PV technologies.
Continuous Improvement:
- Utilize each project as an opportunity to refine design and execution processes.
- Contribute to the development of a standards library, including templates, drawings, and equipment specifications.
Core Competencies:
Experience: A minimum of 5 years in the electrical and/or renewable fields, with specific experience in connecting renewables and BESS to the grid. Engaging utilities regarding connection agreements would be highly valued.
Technical Skills:
- Ability to produce comprehensive scope of work packages, including documents, drawings, and specifications.
- In-depth understanding of BESS/UPS operation and installation.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems (both low voltage and high voltage) and civil engineering principles.
Regulatory Knowledge: Excellent understanding of local acts, regulations, permits, standards, and directives related to BESS.
Communication Skills: Proficient in both oral and written communication, enabling effective interaction with various stakeholders.
Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to address challenges that may arise in the field.
Utility Knowledge: Understanding of utility grid practices, including interconnection, transmission

Market Strategy Development:
- Conduct comprehensive market analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and threats related to Balancing Market, Wholesale Market, capacity markets and other flexibility services in Japan.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement effective market strategies aligned with GridBeyond’s business objectives.
- Monitor competitor activities and industry developments to stay ahead of market changes.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Stay abreast of regulatory changes, guidelines, and standards affecting the energy industry, with a focus on response and reserve ancillary services and capacity markets.
- Ensure that market regulatory risks are identified, and managed in customer contracts in line with company risk appetite.

Market Participation:
- Manage the company’s registration and participation in Balancing, Wholesale and capacity Markets as an Aggregation Co-ordinator.

Project Management

Stakeholder Engagement:

What do I need to be a good technical fit for this role?

- The successful candidate for this role will be tasked with enabling GridBeyond to grow a portfolio of: Standalone and co-located utility-scale BESS and other generation assets; route-to-market and trading services; and, SaaS.
- Lead our Front of the meter propositions in Japan, participating in webinars, seminars and exhibitions, to grow our brand recognition and thought leadership activities

What will I be doing?
Responsibilities include:
- Understanding the opportunities across all available markets to maximize revenue for BESS target sector identified above in Japan.
- Develop and progressing a sales pipeline in Salesforce of existing operational and to be built assets in key states.
- Organizing face-to-face and remote meetings with key targets, and other market participants to enable sales success, especially BESS manufacturers and developers to forge strategic partnerships.
- Cultivate strong relationships with key decision makers and manage relationships with senior stakeholders using recognisable engagement mapping techniques such as Miller Heiman or equivalent.
- Support the wider business understanding the Japan Battery market and the required product evolution to support sales success.
- Work with your direct management team to originate PPA solutions to support business success.
- Build qualitative strategic account plans to clearly present a path to success.
- Supporting and progressing the development of market solutions in collaboration with key internal stakeholders.
- Ensure CRM system is fully updated and all information pertaining to sales leads and activity is entered at least weekly.
- Run through territory planning calls and weekly sales reviews from CRM database highlighting risks and opportunities from activity entered into the CRM system.
- Ensure that all monthly sales review material is in place for the Leadership team to evaluate at the monthly sales review.
- Identifying opportunities to create additional cross-offerings and synergies based on client /industry demand.
The successful candidate will also possess:
- A strong understanding of the Japanese UK energy markets, and experience of Power Trading would be a significant advantage.
- A proven track record of delivering results within the Japanese Energy industry.
- A self starter who is able to work of their own initiative to enable business success.
- Commercial aptitude, with experience contributing to business strategy by identifying and pursuing market opportunities.
- The ability to effectively communicate complex information to a variety of stakeholders including those in sales and operational functions and most importantly to board level with actionable summary reporting.
