Building a culture of respect: GridBeyond’s evolving EDI commitment

At GridBeyond, we are on a journey—a journey to reimagine what equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) looks like our workplace. This isn’t just about implementing policies or meeting targets. It’s about reshaping our culture to reflect the world we want to live and work in.

In this article Global HR Director Laura Merriman discusses what EDI means to GridBeyond.

What does EDI mean to GridBeyond?

As a global company, EDI has been at the heart of what we do for years. We’re already a really diverse workforce, spanning people of 16 nationalities working for GridBeyond globally, so we really want everybody to feel that they’re included and part of this organisation no matter their background.

By promoting EDI, it means we’re recognising and understanding how people with different identities experience the world and our workplace. When we talk about equity at GridBeyond, this is about identifying and eliminating barriers to fair access, opportunity and advancement for everyone. And when we talk about Inclusion, it’s important that our employees feel a sense of belonging and value in our organisation, and we are definitely making progress. In April 2025 we were awarded (and even exceeded the national benchmarks) the Investors in Diversity Silver award with a company called Diversity and Inclusion Ireland, which is all about embedding the right behaviours into the organisation and listening about what our colleagues have to say about experiencing the culture within our organisation. But we aren’t planning to stop there.

Moving from EDI to respect

There is a huge shift in what people are seeking from organisations, and those known for their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion are more attractive to top talent. So we understand that as we continue to grow, we need to remain competitive and attract the best people, especially the younger generations entering the workforce who prioritise these values. Most of all, with our EDI journey ahead, we want everyone to feel included in our journey and welcome all feedback and engagement along the way.

Looking ahead moving into the leading phase of our strategy, our goal will be about demonstrating that EDI is embedded across everything in the organisation and is delivering the lived experience by each of our colleagues.

At GridBeyond, we work with customers and companies from all over the world to help deliver a global carbon zero future by leveraging innovative technologies. In the energy sector, where climate targets, digitalisation, and decentralisation intersect, collaboration across diverse perspectives isn’t just valuable; it’s essential and EDI brings together individuals from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.

While EDI remains foundational to how we operate, we believe the most meaningful change begins with a simple, principle: Respect. Respect isn’t a policy or a tick-box exercise, it’s a practice. Respect is personal, human, and universal and brings focus back to the way we treat each other, every day. We create space where people feel safe to speak up, contribute ideas, and bring their whole selves to work. Respect unlocks the true potential of diverse teams because it fosters trust which is vital for high-performing organisations.

This diversity of thought helps us uncover fresh ideas, challenge assumptions, and find better solutions to the complex problems we face every day. Whether we’re engineering new ways to balance the grid or developing AI-driven platforms to optimise energy use, inclusive thinking drives innovation.

Leading by example

Many of us find it difficult—if not a little uncomfortable—to think of ourselves as role models. But the truth is, we are. Whether we realise it or not, our stories and our actions shape the culture for everyone in the business and it’s our responsibility to model inclusive behaviours, and to create spaces where others can thrive.

We know that culture change doesn’t happen in policies—it happens in conversations, actions, and shared values and I’m proud to say our leadership team is committed to being visible champions of EDI and respect.

The future of work is evolving. At GridBeyond, we believe the companies that will lead this new era are those that embrace respect, flexibility, shared responsibility, and diversity as core business strategies—not just compliance checklists. We’re proud of the steps we’ve taken so far, but we also know there’s always more to do.

This is our commitment: to keep listening, learning, and leading. Because building an inclusive culture isn’t a destination—it’s a way of doing business.
