International Day of Women and Girls In Science
Guest blog with Laura Leonard, Regulatory Market Development Specialist – Ireland
On the 11 February the United Nations will celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science. As reported by the UN there is a gender gap of women in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), women only make up around 30% of this workforce.
It is shown that the divergence between men towards STEM subjects and women away from STEM all starts from the education of young girls. Encouraging and supporting the further learning of these subjects is a key tool in promoting women in STEM. However, times are changing and this gap needs to narrow.
Due to the need to step away from fossil fuels the renewable energy industry is ramping up at an incredible pace perhaps not seen in any other industry before. The opportunities are endless for women in this sector whether it be engineering, market and regulation or public and stakeholder engagement roles.
As someone without an engineering degree but working in Market Strategy and Regulation for the electricity grid and now a renewable energy company for the past 4 years, I believe that women from all industry backgrounds can be involved in this sector and that not having a technical degree does not exclude anyone from pursuing a career in STEM.
Iām happy to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science to show young girls that there is room for everyone in this industry and that the work needed towards a decarbonised world must include everyone.
