New MW Dispatch Service launched

National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO), in collaboration with UK Power Networks and National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED), has introduced a new ancillary service (the MW Dispatch Service) that aims to harnesses intelligent technology to unlock additional capacity.

Unveiled on 9 August the MW Dispatch Service provides a new route to market for maximizing the potential of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) while alleviating capacity constraints, by allowing these resources to seamlessly integrate with the network. With the support of the UK Power Networks and NGED control rooms, the ESO will be able to instruct these DER units to reduce their output at times of system constraint, enabling DERs to receive constraint payments for the electricity they would have otherwise generated. The ESO said the service provides a more comprehensive and potentially cost-efficient solution compared to the established Balancing Mechanism as it has a forward-looking strategy that embraces inclusivity while potentially streamlining implementation processes.

Claire Dykta, Head of Markets ESO said:

“Collaboration across networks is helping us to unlock new solutions to manage the network of the future. Alongside other steps on our Markets Roadmap, the MW Dispatch Service is unlocking new tools to deliver long-term management of constraint costs and to deliver new service options for distributed assets.”

GridBeyond CCO Mark Davis said:

“This new service broadens the spectrum of balancing options at the disposal of the ESO’s control room. It extends beyond the scope of the currently operational generators within the Balancing Mechanism and will prove instrumental in effectively managing and mitigating network limitations.”
