Big battery investment charges up in Q1 2025

The first quarter of 2025 was the second best on record for investment in large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems in Australia, according to figures released by the Clean Energy Council.

Published on 29 May, the Clean Energy Council’s Quarterly Investment Report: Large-scale renewable generation and storage Q1 2025showed significant momentum for big battery projects across the country, with six projects worth $2.4B in total reaching the financial commitment stage, delivering an extra 1,510MW capacity and 5,016MWh in energy output. The largest of these projects was the four-hour Wooreen Battery in Victoria with a size of 350MW/1,400 MWh. By state, South Australia had the largest share of financially committed storage projects in both capacity (640MW) and energy (1,760MWh). In addition to the six projects that reached financial commitment, a further three battery storage projects commenced construction in the first quarter of 2025, with a total of 840MW storage capacity.

While there were strong results in BESS projects reaching the financial commitment stage in the first quarter of 2025, renewable energy generation projects reaching financial close during the same period got off to a slow start. Two generation projects representing 386MW of new capacity reached financial commitment in the quarter. Five generation projects were commissioned in the quarter for a total operating capacity of 756MW.

Since 2017, 233 generation and storage projects have been commissioned, representing 18,128MW of installed  electricity generation capacity and 2,277MW / 3,918MWh  of energy storage. There are currently 82 renewable electricity generation projects that have either reached financial commitment or are under construction, representing 12,544MW of capacity. There are 69 storage projects (either standalone or hybrid projects) in the pipeline, equivalent to 12,532MW/ 32,078MWh in capacity / energy output.
