ERCOT issues weather watch amid freezing temperatures
ERCOT has issued a weather watch for Monday through Friday (6-10 January) as temperatures drop throughout the state resulting in higher demand for electricity and the potential for lower reserves.
ERCOT announces a weather watch to alert the market and wider public about significant weather conditions that could increase electrical demand and reduce reserves. Should the situation warrant it, a voluntary conservation notice and conservation appeal will follow the weather watch. If further action is required, there are three levels of energy emergencies. Controlled outages occur only at Level 3.
“At this time, grid conditions are expected to be normal, and there is no current expectation of an energy emergency,” ERCOT said in a written statement, adding that it will continue to monitor weather conditions closely.
According to ERCOT’s supply and demand projections (updated on January 7), peak demand could reach over 71GW on January 8. Energy supply is exceeding demand. As of Monday morning, the state’s operating reserves — or the energy that can be quickly deployed in the event of a sudden outage — stand above the threshold of 2,500MW when emergency measures would begin.
