ERCOT unveils voluntary curtailment program
ERCOT has announced that it is implementing a voluntary curtailment program allowing large flexible customers, such as crypto mining facilities, to reduce their power use during periods of high demand.
The measures, announced on December 6, are part of continued improvements to support grid reliability. Under the program, ERCOT will provide participating customers with an automated notification (via phone call, SMS text message, and email) requesting curtailment of consumption during periods of low or declining reserves.
The program is primarily intended for large flexible customers but added that any large customer directly connected to the grid Transmission system can participate, subject to approval.
The amount of load that may be registered in this program must be energized at the time of registration and may not include any amount that is, or may be, qualified, offered, committed, or used to provide any Ancillary Service or ERS.
ERCOT noted that the program is temporary and completely voluntary until it establishes a long-term set of rules. Registration for the program has begun and ERCOT sees the program going live January 1, 2023.
GridBeyond VP of Revenue – North America Joe Hayden said:
“This program will allow large power users that have the flexibility and willingness to reduce their energy use quickly the opportunity to provide a valuable service to the power grid if needed. Most hours in the Texas energy markets are unremarkable; low commodity prices, stable grid, adequate generation capacity in reserve and contracted ERS as a further back-up. But under certain circumstances system margins can be tight, pushing up energy costs and creating opportunities for organizations that can predict and react quickly to market volatility.
“The combination of our ERCOT price forecasting and automated dispatch allows our clients to see the problem hours in advance and/or react in real-time – allowing them to secure revenue and summer-proof their operations.”

The electricity landscape is changing, which is significantly increasing costs and risks for businesses. The complexity of the ERCOT market is a challenging landscape. But with any challenge comes opportunity…if you have the right technology.
