Government unveils bill discounts for energy-intensive businesses
The government has announced additional support for energy-intensive businesses in the form of discounts of up to 20% on predicted wholesale prices.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced on 26 April that applications are now open for energy and trade-intensive sectors that have been most affected by the global energy price hike to claim further discounts on their bills between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024.
The government’s priority is to halve inflation, and this support package aims to help achieve this goal. Sectors such as ceramics and textiles are among those potentially eligible for the discounts. These industries use large amounts of energy to deliver their goods but cannot increase their prices due to strong international competition.
The government is urging businesses to check their eligibility and submit their applications at the earliest opportunity. As of April, the government said its policies have saved businesses £5.9B on energy costs.
The Energy Bills Discount Scheme launched this month automatically gives businesses across the UK money off their energy bills as wholesale energy prices fall. Businesses are advised to check the government’s website to find out their eligibility and what they need to do to apply. The discounts could be reflected in bills as soon as June, with support backdated to 1 April.
Eligible organisations have until 28th April to apply.
