Irish solar sets record in March, says EirGrid

Ireland saw new records set for solar power on the national electricity grid in March, with 39% of electricity coming from renewable sources 1 last month according to provisional figures from EirGrid.

In a news release published on 4 April, the grid operator said that on 25 March, grid scale solar power in the Republic of Ireland supplied 750MW at one stage of the day—over 18MW more than the previous record for Irish solar – set in July 2024. This follows a new peak wind power record on the grid set in February. Overall, March saw the third-highest ever amount of solar powered electricity produced in a calendar month for Ireland. March also saw further records set for battery storage, with the highest ever level of discharge from grid-scale battery power sources (300MW) seen on 14 March.

Overall electricity system demand stood at 3,061GWh for March. Wind power met a third of this demand, while gas was the single biggest source of electricity generation for the month at 39%, and 18% of demand was met by electricity imported via interconnection.
