NESO tables digitalisation plans
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has set out a series of key actions needed to digitalise the energy sector.
The Sector Digitalisation Plan, published on 1 September, notes that to achieve Clean Power by 2030, the whole energy system will need to use advanced modelling, artificial intelligence and align with data from other impacted economic sectors. These requirements demand a foundational digital energy system that supports the creation, processing, sharing, and interpretation of data with digitalised tooling and processes.
The plan establishes 16 key actions across six topics: consumer simplicity, consumer-led flexibility, grid decarbonisation and security, networks, access and connections, system operability, and supply chain and workforce.
Key actions included the future of flexibility markets on the British energy grid including for electricity networks to develop an asset register for flexibility assets that integrates with the Flexibility Market Asset Registration (FMAR) system and implement it by October 2027. In addition the market facilitator will determine if early progress can be made in creating new standards for flexibility markets to enable coordination and deliver value for flexibility markets within 2026. NESO will also determine technology requirements to optimise large volume of low-carbon assets by mid-2028.
