North Star BlueScope Steel chooses GridBeyond to support its energy and sustainability agenda

GridBeyond, a leader in harnessing cutting-edge AI technologies to revolutionize the energy landscape, has been selected to support North Star BlueScope Steel’s Delta, Ohio, mini-mill in strengthening its energy strategy and accelerating achievement of its sustainability goals.
North Star’s selection will bring GridBeyond’s energy intelligence platform to the steel mill to support grid balancing, profitability enhancement and targeted carbon emission reductions.

The initial agreement provides for GridBeyond’s management of 90MW with aspirations to expand the agreement to 200MW once the energy intelligence platform delivers decarbonization advantages and energy trading strategies that capture monetary value across a progressively challenging grid future.

North Star participates in the Five Coincident Peak (5CP) program, which – when predicted by GridBeyond – will ease the steel mill’s load impact on the northwestern Ohio electricity grid during times of heavy demand. This will decrease the necessary spinning reserve while generating substantial savings through the reduction of capacity charges that would have been realized across the coming delivery year.

A key differentiator for GridBeyond in the management of demand response programs is the accuracy of the company’s AI platform in predicting 5CP dispatches with minimal error. Over the last two 5CP seasons, GridBeyond’s software has called for only seven dispatches for a duration of two hours each, which coincided with all five of PJM Interconnections coincidental peaks. PJM Interconnection is a regional transmission organization that manages the flow of wholesale electricity in the United States, including in Ohio.

“We continuously work to deliver great products on the market. The accuracy of our software allows businesses to maximize their revenue generation and cost savings. We are delighted to work with North Star BlueScope Steel to support their energy strategy,” said GridBeyond North America President Sean McEvoy.

“Like most companies, North Star consistently looks for ways to reduce costs without sacrificing quality or customer service,” said North Star Energy Manager Matt Morris. “We happy to align with a company that has experience with limited regional electrical supply and offers tools and expertise that will help us lead the charge to net-zero while protecting our leading customer-satisfaction position in hot-rolled coil.”
