Texas poised for peak energy demand this summer

At the end of June, ERCOT released summer weather and energy demand predictions, which projected a peak demand of 87,500MW, surpassing the August 2023 record of 85,464MW.

The increase is fueled, in part, by data centers powering AI and cloud storage, which is expected to grow to over 22,000MW by 2030. 

But ERCOT anticipates the grid will meet demand, bolstered by increased solar production and battery storage capacity. Since the start of the summer of 2024, a total of 9.7GW of new energy resources have been integrated into the grid. These include 5,395MW of solar capacity, 253MW of wind power, 168MW of natural gas generation and 3,821MW of battery storage.

But the grid could still face stress during late evening hours, especially after 9pm, when solar output drops significantly. These periods present a higher likelihood for emergency alerts if demand outpaces available supply.
