US hits 5.6GW energy storage in Q2

The US energy storage market set a new quarterly record in the second quarter of 2025, the latest US Energy Storage Monitor report published by the American Clean Power Association (ACP) and Wood Mackenzie has found.

Published on September 26, the report noted that 5.6GW of capacity was installed within the quarter. Large-scale projects led the expansion, with 4.9GW added.

Texas, California, and Arizona each added over 1GW of capacity, while markets such as the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) saw renewed activity. Florida and Georgia also posted strong growth due to aggressive acquisitions by vertically integrated utilities.

The residential storage market expanded 608MW in Q2; a 132% increase year-over-year and an 8% jump on the previous quarter. Most of this growth was driven by California, Arizona, and Illinois. Community-scale and commercial and industrial storage expanded more modestly at 38MW––an 11% year-over-year increase––with California and New York accounting for over 70% of total capacity.

According to the report, US storage will reach 87.8GW by 2029, driven by residential and utility-scale segments amidst a constantly evolving policy environment. However, US utility-scale storage installations could drop 10% year-over-year in 2027 largely due to uncertainty over pending Foreign Entity of Concern (FEOC) regulations on battery cell sourcing.
