ERCOT expects tight grid conditions

ERCOT and the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) are asking consumers to limit electricity use Monday January 15, due to continued freezing temperatures, very high demand, and unseasonably low wind.

According to the statement from ERCOT, operating reserves are expected to be low Monday morning before the solar ramp-up. As a result, ERCOT asks that electricity use be preserved from 6 a.m. – 10 a.m. ERCOT said it expects similar conditions on Tuesday. The council also requests all government agencies to reduce energy use at their facilities until at least 10 a.m. Monday.

In 2023, January peak demand reached 65,632 MW, with the current all-time peak demand record of 85,508 MW set on August 10, 2023. The all-time winter peak demand record of 74,525 MW was set December 23, 2022, in the 7-8 a.m. hour during Winter Storm Elliott.

Previously, ERCOT said the grid was prepared and issued a weather alert for Sunday through Wednesday. ERCOT expected conditions to remain stable, though with heightened demand and a drop in solar and wind energy production. The group says they are working with neighboring grid operators and market participants to get additional generation capacity.
