Turning heat pumps into revenue-generating assets

Heat pumps are usually bought to deliver efficient, low-carbon heat. But these assets have the potential to do more, with the right optimisation partner. A heat pump is one of the largest electrical loads on site, and when it’s paired with thermal storage, it becomes demand that can move. That flexibility has real value, and right now most operators are leaving it on the table.

From heat to revenue: how it works

It starts with the heat pump itself, doing what it was installed to do. The difference comes from what sits alongside it. A thermal store, or buffer tank, holds heat in reserve. That breaks the link between when electricity is used and when heat is needed. You can run the heat pump a little earlier, pause it for a while, or ramp it down when the grid is under pressure, and the store keeps the heat flowing in the meantime. That’s what turns a fixed load into flexible demand. Consumption can be shifted to match what the grid needs at any given moment, without compromising heat delivery.

On its own, one asset or site’s flexibility is useful but aggregated with other sites and assets then optimised across energy, capacity and grid balancing markets, it becomes valuable. This is where GridBeyond comes in. Our AI-powered platform forecasts, schedules and dispatches your assets automatically, within the operating limits you set, and stacks revenue streams so each kilowatt of flexibility earns as much as it can. The result is additional revenue from an asset you already own, while it keeps doing its day job.

What you gain

The most obvious benefit is new income. Flexibility markets and grid services pay for the ability to adjust demand when it’s needed, and a well-managed heat pump and thermal store can access those payments without changing what your site delivers.

Another benefit id cost reduction; electricity prices swing through the day, and peaks are expensive. Shifting consumption into cheaper periods cuts your exposure to those spikes, so you spend less to produce the same heat.

Thermal storage is what makes both possible. Stored heat gives you room to manoeuvre, reducing reliance on real-time heat production and protecting supply even while the heat pump responds to the market.

And there’s a wider gain too. Every flexible asset helps balance supply and demand on a grid that’s absorbing more and more renewable generation. Your heat pump becomes part of a cleaner, more resilient energy system, not just a consumer of it.

Heat plus flexibility equals greater value

Heat pumps are central to decarbonising heat. Treating them as flexible assets makes the business case stronger, too. Smarter heating, more flexible energy use, and a clearer route to a resilient energy strategy.

GridBeyond helps energy users across Great Britain, Ireland, the US, Australia and Japan unlock the value hidden in their assets. If you operate large-scale heat pumps or a heat network, we’d love to show you what your flexibility could be worth. Contact us
