Japan issues energy shortage warning amid soaring temperatures
The Japanese government has warned that power supplies would be strained in the Tokyo area on 27 and 28 June and has called on people to save energy.
On 26 June, METI issued an “electricity supply shortage warning” for the first time under a new system, saying that the Tokyo area was expected to suffer a shortage Monday afternoon as temperatures in the Kanto region were likely to remain high. On 27 June, this was extended until 28 June. The government asked people to make efforts to save electricity, particularly between 3pm and 6pm.
In Tokyo and eight nearby prefectures in eastern Japan, excess generating capacity will drop as low as 3.7%, according to estimates released by METI. A buffer of 3% is considered the minimum required for a stable power supply.
